Household air pollution (OMS) 16-12-25
Approximately 2.1 billion people worldwide use open fires or inefficient stoves fuelled by wood, coal or oil, causing severe indoor air pollution and posing a major health risk. This pollution mainly affects women and children, who are generally responsible for cooking and collecting firewood. In 2021, it caused approximately 2.9 million deaths, including more than 309,000 children under the age of five. The development of clean fuels and cooking technologies is therefore essential to reduce this pollution. Without significant political action, 1.8 billion people could still be without access to them by 2030.
